The Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007 update

The Scottish Government is taking forward a comprehensive implementation programme to deliver the provisions outlined in the new Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007.

The Act will strengthen protection for vulnerable adults through the creation of a list of people barred from working/volunteering with protected adults, completing the safeguards introduced through the Adult Support and Protection (Scotland) Act 2007, There will also be a list of people barred from working/volunteering with children (which will replace the current Disqualified from Working with Children List ). Both new lists will be manage by a Central Barring Unit.

The new vetting and barring scheme is expected to 'go live' Spring/Summer 2009 (although a date has not been decided as yet) along with an improved system which will minimize the bureaucracy of disclosure checks. Details of the scheme are being developed through a comprehensive implementation programme and secondary legislation 2007-08.
